DataLink Release Notes and Change Report

Version 4.1.0 Released 02/28/2017

AquaCalc DataLink 4 requires a reinstall from our website or from the CD Setup files. We have updated the development environment to accomodate a change by Microsoft requiring a new Digital Signature using the SHA256RSA algorithm. See below.

• Changed ownership and copyright to AquaCalc LLC / JBS Instruments.
• Fixed error when opening an output file in the AquaCalc Analyzer in Excel 2013 and later.
• Fixed graphing error for Discharge in the Section Explorer preview graph that incorrectly plotted vertical discharge instead of vertical discharge percent.
• Updated Digital Signature of signed code. A digital signature is used to sign the ClickOnce install utility and the AquaCalc DataLink "exe" (executable file).
  • Addressed multiple serious issues resulting from the expiration and change in the JBS “Signing Certificate”. This includes:
    • Changed programming platform from Visual Studio 2010 to Visual Studio 2012. This Included a change to the prerequisites (supporting Microsoft files). The following prerequisites are now required and may need to be automatically installed by the Setup routine:
      • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 (x86 and x64)
      • Windows Installer 4.5
      • Microsoft® System CLR Types for SQL Server® 2012 (x86)
      • Microsoft Report Viewer 2012 Runtime
    • These changes will affect the Microsoft Click Once update process that DataLink uses.
• AquaCalc Pro Plus firmware version 2.3.3 BETA released to beta. (Beta firmware is still in testing, do not install without contacting manufacturer. This firmware:
  • Adds Bluetooth functionality to an AquaCalc Pro Plus with the optional Bluetooth module installed.

Version 3.7.0 Released 10/27/15

Changes:

• Fixed graphing error in Section View. Section View.
• AquaCalc Pro Plus firmware version 2.3.0 BETA released to beta. (Beta firmware is still in testing, do not install without contacting manufacturer. This firmware:
  • Adds Bluetooth functionality to an AquaCalc Pro Plus with the optional Bluetooth module installed.
• Adds a check for current firmware version.

Version 3.6.0 Released 08/10/2015

Changes:

• AquaCalc Pro Plus firmware version 2.2.4 given Full Release, no longer BETA firmware. This firmware update:
  • Fixes a bug with the access and storage of the Date and Time that had the potential to produce a scrambled Begin Time or End Time.
  • Improved beep tone consistency in Measure screen. Key press tones sometimes changed.
  • Fixes a bug in The AquaCalc that did not allow you to download Section 30.
  • Fixes a bug with Summary Q value the Main Menu, which was not being updated correctly after a change in the Section data.
  • Fixes a problem with multiple pairs of Wall Coefficients that lead to the mis-calculation of Summary Total Q.

Version 3.4.0 Released 05/20/2014

Changes:

• Improved sorting in the Section Explorer when clicking on the column headers in the Section list view, including ascending and descending sorts, and sorting by dates by converting string dates to real dates.
• Added Drag and Drop functionality to Section Explorer. Files may now be dragged from the List View to the Folder Tree View to move them from one folder to the next. Folders may not be dragged to move (but can be moved using the Move item in the right-click menu).
• Added File renaming by clicking a second time on the file label in the List view of Section Explorer screen.
• Added Folder renaming using folder label editing in the Section Explorer.
• The AquaCalc Pro Updater Tool now includes three versions of the firmware for the AquaCalc Pro Plus, including a "BETA" version, and a warning if that version is selected.
• Fixed bug when deleting or moving files in Section Explorer. File would be reported as "Open" and could not be deleted, unless selected again.

Version 3.3.2 Released 04/14/2014

Changes:

• Removed AquaCalc Pro Plus Firmware version 2.2.0 BETA from full release. Re-instated firmware version 2.1.5 as second choice.

Version 3.3.1 Released 04/04/2014

Changes:

• Older AquaCalc Pro downloads not longer prompt for a file name, but automatically use the filenames created in the Download Dialog box. This makes downloading for older AquaCalc Pros faster and more like the AquaCalc Pro Plus.
• Added a File Link in the Data View of the Download Dialog after a successful section download. Clicking this File Link after a manual download will open the Section Viewer.
• Fixed bug in Download Sections for downloading from AquaCalc Pro where Save Dialog box will not open to correct folder.
• Fixed bug where AquaCalc_Pro_Analyzer.xls was not found after release of version 3.2.1

Version 3.2.1

Changes:

• Fixed bug in Download Sections where COM port is incorrectly set to the default port after changing Download To folder leading to a failed download.
• Changed DataLink Update screen to simplify updating.
• Fixed bug in Download Sections where window would be placed off-screen and could not be accessed. (User could use alt-spacebar Move menu item to recover).
• Added version 2.1.6 version of AquaCalc Pro Plus (APP) firmware. Changes include:
  • APP operating firmware 2.1.6 (Full Release):
    • Improved low battery management in the Measure screen. To counter low battery problems in cold weather, the voltage level at which the low battery warning appears was increased.

Section Graphs / Section Report:

• Added Ice Draft to Section Preview graph in the Section Explorer window, and to the Section View and Section Report graphs. Added Ice Draft to Section Report Observation Detail page.
• Fixed bug where Section Explorer and Download Section windows disappear off the visible screens if moved off-screen, minimized and then DataLink is closed from the Windows taskbar.

Version 3.1.0

Section Explorer screen:

• Added Section graph preview to Section Explorer screen. Shows a graph in addition to text preview.
• Multiple sections can now be selected in the section list and deleted at all at once.

Download Section Measurements Screen:

• Added Refresh button in Download Section Measurements window.
• Removed "Delete Section After Download" checkbox to prevent accidental deletion of measurements. Use "Delete Sections" button instead!
• Section List is not refreshed after "Delete Sections" button is pushed so that sections deleted from AquaCalc Pro Plus will still be visible in Download window until screen is closed.
• Added a "Refresh" Button to refresh Section List from a connected AquaCalc Pro Plus.
• Added icons to selected buttons.

Settings Screen:

• Added a Tabbed Settings window to cleanup the Settings window.

Other:

• Improved downloading of multiple files when the files of the same name already exist. You no longer need to approve each individual existing file overwrite.
• Created CD type DataLink install process (which does not update automatically) as an alternative to web based Microsoft Click-Once installation.
• Added option to install from CD Setup. When DataLink is installed from the CD setup files (and NOT directly from our website) automatic updating is disabled. Updates will need to be manually downloaded and installed.
• Added the ability to create a optional download log that lists the file names and file paths in an XML log file. These log files were created at the request of the USGS to aid in importing downloaded measurements to their systems.
• Added registry keys in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER space to identify the location of the DataLink 3 executable (AquaCalc DataLink 3.exe), and the file path and name of the last DataLink Download Log file (DataLinkDownloadLog.xml):

Minor bug fixes including:

Changes include:

• Added a "Company Name / Report Footer" entry in the Settings screen for the user to enter a custom report footer.
• Added a "Find All" "First Only option in Settings to stop searching for more AquaCalc Pro Plus units after the first one is found. This will speed up the download process, but will only find one AquaCalc Pro Plus.
• Improved Section List reporting when there is a problem downloading or saving section measurements.
• The "Target" line in the Section View graph now uses the percent discharge target from the  AquaCalc output file summary information.

The AquaCalc Pro Firmware Updater software will help you update the firmware in your AquaCalc Pro Plus to the current version.

WARNING: All Sections and observations in the AquaCalc Pro Plus may be lost when updating the firmware! Copy all data from the AquaCalc to your computer using the DataLink program.

How to Update the firmware in your AquaCalc Pro Plus

1. Connect the AquaCalc Pro Plus to your computer's USB port using the AquaCalc's data cable.
2. Run the AquaCalc Pro Firmware Updater Tool by selecting "AquaCalc Pro Firmware Updater" from DataLink's Tools menu.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions in the Updater program.

Note: All AquaCalc 5000s, both the Basic and the Advanced, cannot use this update.

Selecting a firmware version to install.

Updater contains two versions of firmware. Normally this is the most current version of the firmware, and the previous version or a BETA version which has not completed testing. If you wish, you can select an older version to on the "Pro Plus" tab.

BETA firmware

DataLink may contain a BETA test version of the AquaCalc Pro Plus firmware instead of the previous version. This version of the firmware has completed testing at JBS, but needs volunteers to further test in the field. Select this only if you are willing to report any problems immediately to JBS.

>Troubleshooting

If your AquaCalc does not work properly after loading the new firmware, try loading the firmware again. If you continue to have problems, we encourage you to contact us using the information above.
If you receive a message in the AquaCalc's Diagnostic screen that reads "Upload FAILED":

• Check all connections between the AquaCalc and the computer.
• You should be able to download a section from the AquaCalc to the computer using DataLink. This is a good check to see if the correct communications port has been set, and the cables are working properly.
  
• If you cannot there is a problem communicating with the AquaCalc.
  
• Close all other programs that might be using the COM ports on your computer. 
• Contact JBS Instrument using the information at the bottom of this page.

 Bug Fixes:

1. Fix a bug where velocities were not calculated correctly in the Measure screen after changing from Price AA meter to Pygmy meter (Note: Section Totals and output velocities were not affected by this bug).

Known remaining problems:

The battery meter in version 2.0.6 BETA is still not calibrated correctly.

When there is 88% actual battery life remaining, the APP reports 62%.
When there is 51% actual battery life remaining, the APP reports 51%.
When there is 5% of actual battery life remaining, the APP reports 19%.

This is based on a 12 hour battery life. You should start to worry about low battery levels when the APP battery meter shows 20%.

APP rev 2.0.5 BETA Dated 05-06-2012

 Bug Fixes:

1. Incorrect calculation of hanger bar lengths
2. Incorrect meter coefficients used to calculated velocity in the Review Section Totals and during measurement.
3. “Forgetting” meter coefficients in custom meters.
4. Battery meter levels calibration.

How to Update the firmware in your AquaCalc Pro

1. Connect the AquaCalc Pro to your computer's communication / serial port (COM port) using the AquaCalc's data cable.
2. Run the AquaCalc Pro Firmware Updater Tool by selecting "Update AquaCalc Pro Firmware" from the DataLink > Tools Menu.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions in the Updater program, selecting the "AquaCalc Pro" option in the first screen. The Updater "loads" the program into two places in the AquaCalc Pro: A "High" location and a "Low" location.

Note: All AquaCalc 5000s, both the Basic and the Advanced, cannot use this update.

Troubleshooting Firmware Updates

If your AquaCalc does not work properly after loading the new firmware, try loading the firmware again. If you continue to have problems, we encourage you to contact us using the information above.
If you receive a message in the AquaCalc's Diagnostic screen that reads "Upload FAILED":

AquaCalc Pro Revision History (Old Model)

AquaCalc Pro firmware rev 1.3.7 Dated 08-18-2008

 Additional Features:

1. Ability to delete all observations but leave all vertical information. When a section is selected in the Sections screen the "Delete" option has been changed to "Delete Sect." (used to delete the entire section) and an additional option has been added: "Delete Obs.". When "Delete Obs." is selected, all of the observation information will be deleted from a section, but section information (gage id, meter info, etc.) and vertical information (individual distance and depth locations) are not deleted. This is useful when measurements are performed from the same tag-line positions each time, such as in pre-marked bridge locations.
2. 0.2 Flood measurement is now properly enabled. In the Section Setup Screen when "8) .2 FLOOD" is selected, a line has been added "6) Flood Coef." where a coeffcient can be added that applies to all velocities performed at the 0.2 position. When performing flood measurements observations are only made at the 0.2 depth position across the entire section. A flood coefficient is used to aduste the observed velocity to represent the mean velocity. The usual 0.2 depth flood coefficent is about 0.87 but varies by stream. Please see the AquaCalc Pro manual "Performing Flood Measurements".
3. Copy Horzontal Angle can now be set to copy only in the existing vertical. When 6) Copy Horiz. Angle is selected in the Vertical Setup screen, a second line appears that allows you to select "7) Same Vert. Only". The Horizontal Angle Coefficient is reset to a value of 1 when a New Vertical is created. This is now the default setting, so if you wish to use the same horizontal angle throughout a section, you must now turn off this feature.
4. Inverted velocity in vertical warning message. The AquaCalc Pro now warns the user with an on-screen message when inverted vertical veleocities are found. Normal vertical will have higher velocities at the surface. Abnormal verticals may have higher velocities lower. When inverted velocities are found, the user should perform measurements in all three observtion location 0.2, 0.6, and 0.8.
   Improved Features:
5. "Open Last" now opens the last section and returns to the last vertical in the section instead of the first vertical as in previous versions.
6. Negative Offset values for the Current Meter constants are now allowed. Offset values from -6.0 to + 6.0 are now allowed. In previous versions negative offsets were not allowed.
7. Changed the action of the Enter key in the Measure screen. Pressing the Enter key accidently, will not cause you to exit the Measure screen. Use the Menu key to return to the Main menu. Bug Fixes:
8. Fixed un-intentional creation of new sections when the Re-Open Last softkey is used in the Main Menu and no vertical or section information entered. Under certain conditions, empty Sections would be created in previous firmware versions when using the "Re-Open Last" softkey.

AquaCalc Pro firmware rev 1.1.4 Dated 11-16-05 Bug fixes and enhancements:

1) “LEW No” in header output changed to read "LEW"
2) Incorrect hanger bar length when using metric fixed: Now when System Preferences is set to "Metric" the values displayed for the hanger bar length are displayed in meters. In addition the bar length is adjusted into meters for the depth calculation.
3) Consistent navigation using keypad buttons: Navigation button functions changed to conform to the following:
-Menu button: Takes the user to the Main Menu Screen.
-Measure button: Takes user to the Measure screen
-Enter button: Moves up / back one level in hierarchy. (Exception: when the user presses ENTER from Section Setup or Vertical Setup Menus, they will be returned to the Measure Screen instead of to the Setup Screen.)
-Esc button: Not used in navigating through menus or screens. Used to cancel the entry of numbers and text and restore previous values when performing data entry. Values are displayed as "reversed" text light on a dark background when this function is available.
4) Replaced "1 of 2" with “More” and “2 of 2” with “Back” in soft-key menus.

AquaCalc Pro firmware rev 1.1.3 Dated 01-23-04

Bug fixes and enhancements:
1) Display contrast setting in Preference Menu is saved. Once you have selected a display contrast level in the Preference menu it will be the default setting until changed.
2) Lighter contrast extended for hotter weather (Pro should be kept in shade). The range of contrast control in the graphic display has been changed and extended to accomodate the changes made by the manufacture of the display.
3) Preferences Keypad Beep saved.
4) Entries for the Staff Heigh and the Gage Height have been extended from 99 to 9999 ft.
5) Change of Output file to Output version 1.5 due to item 4

The first three meters available without configuration are the default standard group: Price AA 1-1 rating standard 2, Pygmy rating standard 2, and Price AA 5-1 rating standard 2. The next seven meters can be configured by the user. AquaCalc Pro firmware rev 1.0.6 Dated 10-11-02 fixes and enhancements:

1) Horizontal angle calculation in the download has been corrected. In the downloaded file the output displayed both the horizontal angle "HA" and the cosine coefficient (HC) of the horizontal angle "HC:VF" were incorectly displayed. The horizontal angle coefficient was always correctly displayed and correctly adjusted the velocity. However, the horozontal angle HA was not correctly represented in the output creating confusion.
2) Observation "Time Stamps" are now included on all observations including walls and edge of water.
3) Additional entry in the sounding weight list "User 0.00", allows the user to use any sounding weight without the hanger bar adjustment being automatically added to the depth. The value of the sounding weight on the output is a blank "_____".
4) Measurement syncronization problem has been enhanced. 5) Meter setup table protected from accidently editing an existing nonstandard meter.
